It was sometime in the 1890′s when Marie Joseph Gabriel Antoine Jogand-Pages. better known by his pen name Leo Taxil wrote a hoax that was intended to mock Freemasonry and the Roman Catholic Church’s stand against it. Leo Taxil was accused of libel earlier to this regarding a book he authored called The Secret Loves of Pope Pius IX.
Do Freemasons worship the devil?
He later wrote a letter called, Humanum Genus that talked about the human race being divided into two diverse and opposite parts; one of which was directed to truth and God and the other that was in opposition to that and was of the kingdom of Satan. Leo underwent a public confession to Roman Catholicism after this letter and tried to make things right with the church.
The next book produced by Leo Taxil after his conversion to Catholicism was a four-volume history of Freemasonry. This volume of history contained fictitious eyewitness accounts of their practicing of Satanism. The next book Taxil wrote with publisher Dr. Karl Hacks was Devil in the Nineteenth Century. It named a character Diana Vaughn who he claims was a descendant of the Rosicrucian alchemist Thomas Vaughn. This book also stated that Diana was involved in Satanic freemasonry.
On April 19, 1897, Taxil called a press conference in which he was going to introduce Diana Vaughn but later announced at the press conference that all his statements about the Freemasons were lies. The hoax is still used to this day in books, forums, and other media to prove that freemasonry is Satanic in nature.
The quote most frequently associated with the Taxil Hoax is the following, will help you understand more about “Do Freemasons worship the devil?”:
That which we must say to the world is that we worship a god, but it is the god that one adores without superstition. To you, Sovereign Grand Inspectors General, we say this, that you may repeat it to the brethren of the 32nd, 31st and 30th degrees: The masonic Religion should be, by all of us initiates of the higher degrees, maintained in the Purity of the Luciferian doctrine. If Lucifer were not God, would Adonay and his priests caluminate him? Yes Lucifer is God, and unfortunately Adonay is also god.
For the eternal law is that there is no light without shade, no beauty without ugliness, no white without black, for the absolute can only exist as two gods; darkness being necessary for light to serve as its foil as the pedestal is necessary to the statue, and the brake to the locomotive… Thus, the doctrine of Satanism is a heresy, and the true and pure philosophical religion is the belief in Lucifer, the equal of Adonay; but Lucifer, God of Light and God of Good, is struggling for humanity against Adonay, the God of Darkness and Evil
The Leo Taxil Hoax therefore caused history to be disrupted and has changed the history books for over 100 years in how people see Freemasonry. Therefore, the Freemasons do not worship Satan. This is the answer for the question “do Freemasons worship the devil?”.
