The next book produced by Leo Taxil after his conversion to Catholicism was a four-volume history of Freemasonry. This volume of history contained fictitious eyewitness accounts of their practicing of Satanism. The next book Taxil wrote with publisher Dr. Karl Hacks was Devil in the Nineteenth Century. It named a character Diana Vaughn who he claims was a descendant of the Rosicrucian alchemist Thomas Vaughn. This book also stated that Diana was involved in Satanic freemasonry.

On April 19, 1897, Taxil called a press conference in which he was going to introduce Diana Vaughn but later announced at the press conference that all his statements about the Freemasons were lies.
